For hospitals, centres and health systems seeking JCI accreditation

JCI accreditation software, built to help you achieve JCI accreditation.

wai runs booking, clinical notes, patient messaging in any language, payments and records for hospitals and centres that treat international patients, and keeps each of them as evidence a JCI surveyor can trace. With replies drafted in the patient's language for your team to approve and notes written during the consultation for the clinician to sign, wai is built to help you achieve JCI accreditation.

Updated . Every JCI fact is checked against jointcommission.org and cited below.

What a JCI tracer finds with wai

In a tracer, a surveyor follows one patient through your hospital. With wai, that patient's enquiry, consent, notes, results and follow-up sit on one record, signed and timed, and every message is kept in the language it was written in.

What does JCI assess a hospital against in 2026?

The 8th edition hospital standards, in force since 1 January 2025.

What does a JCI survey look at?

More than a thousand measurable elements, against six months of evidence.2

  1. 01

    Tracers

Surveyors follow real patients through the organisation, checking how care is delivered at each step.

  2. 02

    Leadership interviews

How leaders set direction, govern quality and act on what the data shows.

  3. 03

    Staff qualifications

The files that show each person is qualified and trained for the work they do.

  4. 04

    Facility tour

The environment of care, its safety and its infection control, seen on the day.

  5. 05

    Records and documents

Clinical records and the documents behind them, across a six-month look-back period.

  6. 06

    Leadership conference

The closing conversation, where findings are shared before the formal report.

How does JCI score a survey?

Each measurable element is scored, and findings are placed on the SAFER Matrix.3

  1. MetFully in place
  2. Partially MetIn place, with gaps
  3. Not MetNot in place
  4. AccreditedFor three years
  1. 3 years

is the accreditation cycle. JCI requires accredited organisations to be reaccredited every three years.4

  2. 60 days

to submit a Strategic Improvement Plan after the official survey findings report, where one is required.5

  3. 1,000+

health care organisations in more than 70 countries hold the Gold Seal of Approval.6

  • Findings are placed on the SAFER Matrix by their likelihood to harm and how widespread they are.
  • Elements scored Partially Met or Not Met in higher-risk placements need a Strategic Improvement Plan.
  • If JCI does not accept a plan, the organisation has 30 more days to resubmit it.
  • Hospitals and academic medical centres have five Continuous Engagement touchpoints between triennial surveys.

What changed in the 8th edition?

The 8th edition changed scoring, added two chapters and moved falls.

  1. The hospital standards 8th edition took effect on 1 January 2025, and covers academic medical center hospitals too.
  2. Accreditation Participation Requirements are now scored. Two chapters are new, Health Care Technology and Global Health Impact.7
  3. Patient falls moved from the patient safety goals into Assessment of Patients, leaving five goals. Accreditation 360 is the US Joint Commission's model for US hospitals and does not apply to JCI.

What should JCI accreditation software actually run?

Each module runs part of the organisation and records the evidence for the requirements listed beside it.

  2. 30%

Clinicians using an ambient scribe did 30% less work after hours.9

  3. 23%

Patients sent a notification before their visit were 23% more likely to attend.10

How do you prepare for a JCI survey?

A readiness checklist in five parts, from application to reaccreditation.

01Twelve months out

  • Buy the standards manual and the survey process guide for your programme, and read them as a team.
  • Form an accreditation team, with one owner per chapter.
  • Run a gap analysis against every measurable element, and an action plan with dates.
  • Plan to file the application on JCI Direct Connect 6 to 12 months before you want the survey.

02Patient safety goals

  • Two identifiers on every patient, in every system, at every step.
  • Critical results communicated, read back and recorded.
  • High-alert medications and the checks around them, written and shown.
  • Hand hygiene measured, with the numbers on the wall and in the minutes.

03Patient-centred care

  • Mock tracers on real patients, from first enquiry to follow-up.
  • Consent taken, recorded and explained in a language the patient understands.
  • Assessments complete and timed, and handovers on the record.
  • Information for international patients in their own language.

04Organisation management

  • Staff files complete, with qualifications and training current.
  • Quality measures chosen, tracked monthly and acted on.
  • Access to records controlled by role, with a log you can show.
  • Infection control and facility safety rounds, with actions that close.

05After the survey

  • Read the SAFER Matrix and start the Strategic Improvement Plan the same week.
  • Submit the plan within 60 days of the official findings report.
  • Keep evidence current for the Continuous Engagement touchpoints.
  • Treat reaccreditation in three years as the next survey, starting now.

Questions

What is the best software for JCI accreditation?

The best JCI software is the system your organisation already runs on, so a tracer finds the evidence in the record rather than in a binder. Look for one patient identity behind booking, notes, messaging, payments and access, with contemporaneous notes and a full audit trail. wai is built that way, to help you achieve JCI accreditation.

Is there JCI approved or JCI certified software?

Joint Commission International accredits health care organisations. It does not approve, certify or endorse software, wai included, and software cannot earn an accreditation on a provider's behalf. wai keeps the records your team uses to show JCI how care is delivered, and JCI decides the accreditation.

Is JCI accreditation mandatory?

No, JCI accreditation is voluntary. Licensing stays with the local regulator, such as DHA in Dubai or DOH in Abu Dhabi. Hospitals seek JCI to show international patients, insurers and partners that they meet an international standard.

How long does JCI accreditation last?

Three years. JCI requires accredited organisations to be reaccredited every three years, and hospitals and academic medical centres have five Continuous Engagement touchpoints in between.

Which edition of the JCI hospital standards is in force?

The 8th edition, effective 1 January 2025. It also covers academic medical center hospitals. The ambulatory care standards are in their 4th edition, effective 1 July 2019.

How many International Patient Safety Goals are there?

Five in the 8th edition hospital standards. Patient falls moved into the Assessment of Patients chapter. JCI notes the goals vary by accreditation programme.

Does wai work for hospitals and health systems?

Yes, every site runs on the same record, inbox and reports. Larger organisations usually start with one pathway, prove it on their own data, and widen it from there.

Where does wai keep our records?

In your organisation's own country, under its rules, encrypted, with a full audit log. We set this up with you before go-live.

See wai on your own diary, notes and inbox.

Fifteen minutes on video, on your own diary, notes and inbox. Built to help you achieve JCI accreditation. wai hosts each clinic's records in its own country, under that country's rules. We set this up with you before go-live.
