A clinician at ease in a vast, light-filled private clinic in Santa Fe, the city beyond the glass

Key points

Summary

A Santa Fe clinic runs AI under HIPAA and the New Mexico Medical Board. New Mexico's breach law steps aside for anyone subject to HIPAA, so the federal 60-day breach rule governs patient data. A quarter of the county speaks Spanish at home, and wai drafts each reply in the patient's language for a person at the clinic to approve.

A Spanish enquiry sent from Española at 8pm gets a reply drafted in Spanish and approved by the desk first thing, and the physician leaves the office with every note signed. The New Mexico Medical Board and federal privacy law set the frame for that care in Santa Fe.

The private care market in Santa Fe

Santa Fe County had 156,105 residents in the 2020 to 2024 American Community Survey, with a median age of 48.7 and 28.0% aged 65 or older.3 The City of Santa Fe had 89,019, with a median age of 46.3.3

The Census Bureau's 2023 County Business Patterns counted 571 health care and social assistance establishments in Santa Fe County, with 8,758 paid employees and an annual payroll of about $596 million.2 The New Mexico Medical Board issued 114 physician licences in September and has processed 4,921 renewal applications since 1 April 2026.1

The rules a clinic in Santa Fe works under

The New Mexico Medical Board was established by the Legislature to protect the public from the improper, unprofessional, incompetent and unlawful practice of medicine, and it licenses the state's physicians and physician assistants.1 In wai the licensed clinician reads and signs every drafted note.

New Mexico's Data Breach Notification Act, enacted as House Bill 15 in 2017, requires notice to affected residents within 45 calendar days of discovering a security breach, and notice to the Attorney General when more than 1,000 residents are affected.6 It does not apply to a person subject to HIPAA.6 For a clinic, the HIPAA rule governs instead, with notice to each affected individual without unreasonable delay and no later than 60 calendar days after discovery.7

The same act requires anyone holding New Mexico residents' personal identifying information to arrange its proper disposal, by shredding, erasing or otherwise making it unreadable, once it is no longer reasonably needed.6 Plan the clinic's retention and deletion schedule with that duty in mind.

wai takes recording consent at booking, so every patient agrees before a consultation is recorded.8 wai hosts each clinic's records in its own country, under that country's rules. We set this up with your clinic. wai is compliant with these rules and built for clinics in Santa Fe. For Checkout, a business associate agreement is signed before go-live.9

The languages patients write in

In the 2020 to 2024 American Community Survey, 39,017 of Santa Fe County's 150,317 residents aged five and over spoke Spanish at home, 26.0%, and 10,343 of them reported speaking English less than very well.4 In the City of Santa Fe the Spanish share is 28.1%.4

Statewide, 57,560 New Mexicans speak Navajo at home, 2.9% of those aged five and over, and 18,021 of them speak English less than very well.5 Another 29,098 speak other Native languages of North America.5 wai works in any language, and patients can answer intake questions by voice for the clinician to read in English.8

What a demo shows in Santa Fe

At 8pm a grandmother in Española writes in Spanish asking for an appointment for her husband's blood pressure check. wai drafts the reply in Spanish with two open times read from the physician's busy times in Google Calendar, Outlook or Apple Calendar, and the front desk approves it in the morning.

A visitor staying near the Plaza books an acupuncture session on the clinic's website in three taps and pays the deposit by card or Apple Pay through the clinic's own Stripe account, with the clinic as merchant of record.9 The cancellation policy shows at booking, and the confirmation, receipt and intake questionnaire arrive at once.89

After each consultation the note is drafted, and the clinician reviews and signs it. See how evening messages are handled in after-hours clinic enquiries.

For health systems, tribal health programs and insurers in New Mexico

Hospital systems, health plans and tribal and public health programs in northern New Mexico can have wai build one pathway under their own name, for example follow-up in Spanish after a hospital stay. Data and model rights are agreed in the contract before the build, as set out on the organisations page.

Where to start

First, write the 60-day HIPAA breach clock into the clinic's incident plan, since the state act steps aside for HIPAA-covered practices.67 Second, set a disposal schedule for records the clinic no longer needs.6

Third, count last month's enquiries by language, and bring the Spanish ones to a fifteen-minute demo. Prices are on the pricing page.

Bring last month's Spanish and English enquiries and watch each one drafted for your team to approve.
