Key points

Summary

AI can draft clinical notes and replies to patients in an Athens clinic under GDPR and Greece's Law 4624/2019, which permits health data processing for diagnosis and care with specific safeguards. The operating certificate comes from the Medical Association of Athens, and larger clinic groups also keep a register of AI systems under Law 4961/2022.

The afternoon back for the doctor, and every patient answered before the evening clinic opens. Attica holds nearly half of Greece's physicians, so a well-run front desk is what sets a practice apart in Athens.

The private care market in Athens

The 2021 census counted 643,452 residents in the Municipality of Athens and 3,814,064 in the Region of Attica.1 Of Attica's residents, 3,469,213 held Greek citizenship, and the largest foreign group was Albanian at 140,146.1

ELSTAT's survey of health professionals counted 32,645 physicians in Attica in 2024, up 2.6% on the year, with 6,540 dentists alongside them.2 Visitors add demand on top. Attica's tourist accommodation recorded 5,847,514 arrivals and 12,794,781 nights in 2025.3

The rules a clinic in Athens works under

Article 85 of Law 4472/2017 makes the local Medical Association the authority that grants, suspends and revokes the operating certificate of a medical practice, polyclinic or diagnostic laboratory. If the Association does not decide within one month, the Regional Governor becomes competent.4 In Athens that is the Medical Association of Athens.

The Hellenic Data Protection Authority supervises Law 4624/2019. Its Article 22 lets public and private bodies process special category data where necessary for medical diagnosis or the provision of health care, provided appropriate and specific safeguards are in place.5

Law 4961/2022 sets Greece's own AI duties. A private business using an AI system that affects decisions about staff or candidates must inform them before first use, and medium and large businesses keep an electronic register of the AI systems they use for consumer profiling or staff evaluation.6

wai hosts each clinic's records in its own country, under that country's rules. We set this up with your clinic. wai is compliant with these rules and built for clinics in Athens. The National Electronic Health Record gives patients and doctors one central point for medical data, and through the myHealth app patients can see which professionals have access.7 wai is built to connect to the National Electronic Health Record. We set up your clinic's connection with you.

The languages patients write in

Greek citizens make up the large majority of Attica's residents. After Albanian citizens come Pakistani at 21,323, Romanian at 14,105, Georgian at 13,819 and Bangladeshi at 11,284.1 Add the visitors behind those 5.8 million accommodation arrivals and the inbox mixes local patients with travellers writing from hotels.3

wai works in any language. A hotel guest and a Kypseli family each get a reply in their own words, and nothing is sent until the receptionist approves it.9

What a demo shows in Athens

A WhatsApp message arrives on Sunday at 20:15 from a visitor staying in Plaka who needs a cardiology check before a flight on Tuesday. wai reads the cardiologists' busy times from Google Calendar, Outlook or Apple Calendar, offers an open Monday slot and drafts the reply in the visitor's language, and the receptionist approves it.

The visitor books on the clinic's site, earliest time first, and the deposit settles in euros in the clinic's own Stripe account. On Monday wai drafts the consultation note and a letter for the patient's own doctor, and the cardiologist reviews and signs both. Every message, draft, approval and signature is logged and exportable.8

For health systems, insurers and public bodies in Attica

Private hospital groups, insurers and public health bodies across Attica can commission a system on wai for one clinical pathway, for instance visitor care through the tourist season, with ownership of data and configuration set in the contract. Scoping is set out on the organisations page.

Where to start

First, check the date and scope on your Medical Association operating certificate. Second, write down the Law 4624/2019 safeguards you rely on for health data and who in the team can see what. Third, if your group is medium or large, open the AI register that Law 4961/2022 requires and add each system as you adopt it.

Then count last month's enquiries by channel and hour, and bring them to a fifteen-minute demo. The after-hours enquiries guide shows what to measure. Pricing is published on the pricing page.

Bring a week of enquiries from residents and visitors and watch each one drafted for your team to approve.
